Maemuna — Sea view and legend in the heart of Vernazza

One of the most spectacular sea views in the Cinque Terre, in an apartment where legend meets opera. The windows of Maemuna look towards the Maemuna (or Maimuna) Cave, a secret inlet on the Vernazza coast linked to an ancient Ligurian legend: it is said that a siren with an irresistible song lured sailors towards those waters.

The history of the house is equally fascinating. The former owner, a woman with a passion for opera, used to have a gramophone loaded onto a fisherman's boat to be taken inside the cave, to listen to the sublime sound of opera and classical music amplified by the natural walls. A memory that still lives between these walls today.

Maemuna is a historic building in the ancient heart of Vernazza, with all the charm and limitations of an authentic Ligurian fisherman's house. The kitchen is very small and essential, and the bathroom is compact like that of a boat, with truly limited space. It is a perfect choice for those seeking atmosphere, views and a true Cinque Terre experience — not for those seeking spacious domestic environments.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE — THE MAEMUNA CAVE FROM THE SEA

For those who wish to complete the experience, the Maemuna Cave is only reachable from the sea. Our Cinque Terre Riviera private boat tours, aboard the traditional boats Grecale and Macaia, include this magical stop — ideally retracing the journey of a century ago.

ARRIVING BY CAR

We strongly recommend travelling by train. Those arriving by car can use the public car park above Vernazza, approximately 1,200 m from the pedestrian area: a shuttle reaches the village entrance, from which it is about a 5-minute walk to the concierge office. Advance booking is strongly recommended. Indicative cost: €20/day. Details are provided after booking.

CHECK-IN HOURS AND EVENING ARRIVALS

Standard check-in time is from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm, with on-site assistance from the Cinque Terre Riviera team. From 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm, self check-in is available, with all instructions provided in advance by email. Should the guest request telephone assistance during this time slot — having already received and confirmed reading of the detailed instructions — a supplement of €50.00 may apply. After 10:00 pm neither assisted check-in nor self check-in is possible. We strongly advise against planning late-evening arrivals: trains are rare, the road network in the Cinque Terre is difficult, and the car park above Vernazza may be closed.

PETS

Small and medium-sized dogs are welcome, with a supplement of €70 per stay. Please select the appropriate option when booking. Rules: lead mandatory in all common areas, including stairs; access to beds and sofas is not allowed; owners are responsible for the behaviour of their pet and for respecting other guests.
